Crash on San Mateo Bridge Starts With Stolen Police Car: PD

Hayward officers were investigating earlier accident when one of the motorists involved jumped in patrol car and fled

A multi-vehicle crash on the San Mateo Bridge late Thursday night that blocked all westbound lanes started as a police pursuit of a patrol car stolen from the scene of an earlier crash, according to the Hayward Police Department.

Hayward officers responded to the initial crash off Oaks Drive near Roxbury Lane in the Hayward Hills about 9:25 p.m., police said. As officers investigated the scene, one of the people involved in the crash jumped into a Hayward police patrol car and fled, police said.

Officers spotted the patrol car on Highway 92 about 9:45 p.m. and began a pursuit toward the bridge. Moments later, the suspect crashed the patrol car into three other cars, and the patrol car rolled over the side of the bridge, police said.

There were minor injuries, and the suspect was taken into custody, police said.

The crash blocked all westbound lanes of the bridge, just east of the toll plaza, prompting a Sig-alert, according to the California Highway Patrol.
