Peninsula Teacher Killed in 880 Motorcycle Crash

A San Mateo middle school teacher was killed in a motorcycle crash  in San Leandro last week, the California Highway Patrol reported today.

John Edward McGuinness, 45, a teacher at Bayside STEM Academy, was traveling south on Interstate Highway 880 on a light blue BMW motorcycle when he clipped the left rear of a truck north of Davis Street shortly before 7:30  a.m. Friday, according to the CHP.

The California Highway Patrol said McGuiness was lane-splitting at the time and witnesses say he was traveling 70 mph while the traffic was traveling 30 mph.

Lane splitting is legal in California, but police said Friday that the motorcyclist was going to fast for the traffic at the time.

McGuinness, an Alameda resident, lost control of his  motorcycle and struck the right side of a Volvo. He was ejected from the  motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

No one was available to comment at Bayside STEM Academy.
