“Outrage” Over Probation Term for Man Who Had Sex With Teen Girls

Parents of the victims of a man who had underage sex with girls think he's getting off easy.

Over a dozen sex acts with underage girls -- and no jail time.

The punishment for David Raymond Bates, who pleaded guilty to 13 acts of unlawful sexual relations with girls aged 13 to 15 -- when the former Los Gatos High football player was 19 -- is three years' probation.

And that's made the parent of one of his victims furious, according to Silicon Valley Community newspapers.

He had "unlawful sexual intercourse" with a 13-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a pair of 15-year-olds, the newspaper reported.

A parent of one of the girls called the judge "a joke" as he called out the sentence. "If he'd stolen a car, he'd be going to prison," Judge Philip Pennypacker was told.

One of the children's life has "gone off the rails," with her "dropp[ing] out of school," the newspaper reported.

Bates allegedly cased out the girls at their cheerleading practice. A restraining order was secured before his arrest, a parent said.

Bates, who was unemployed with "few skills" at the time of his arrest, must now register as a sex offender for life and can't go within 300 yards of Los Gatos High, the newspaper reported.

During his probation, he's also barred from using social media like Facebook, and must pay restitution to pay for mental health care of his victims.

But he'll only go to prison if he violates his probation terms, the newspaper reported -- and that's not enough for parents eager for punishment.

One of the girls was bullied at school following the unlawful conduct, the newspaper reported.

"Her grades went from A's and B's to D's and F's. She was diagnosed with PTSD," the unidentified mother said. "Keep him in jail until his victims have finished high school."
