A woman who became entangled in a wreck in San Jose early Sunday died when she was hit by another vehicle while trying to get help following the initial crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly collision, which was reported around 6 a.m., happened at the interchange of Highway 101, Interstate 680 and Interstate 280, Officer Ross Lee with the CHP said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, an elderly husband and his wife were driving from southbound Highway 101 to northbound Interstate 680 when they got in a minor crash, according to Ross.
While the husband wanted to wait for a tow truck, his wife wanted to get out of their vehicle and search for help, Ross said. As she was walking to find assistance, she was struck by at least one vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
All lanes have reopened connecting Highway 101 with northbound Interstate 680 following the crash and investigation, according to the CHP.
The CHP canceled its Sig-Alert for the area at 9:08 a.m. and said the connector ramps from both directions of Highway 101 were open.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
