Domestic Violence Deaths in Santa Clara County Reach 20-Year Low

Two Santa Clara County residents died as a result of domestic violence disputes in all of 2014, the lowest number in 20 years, officials revealed Friday.

That’s still two deaths too many, said assistant district attorney Cindy Hendrickson.

In 2013, 11 such deaths were reported, according to the Mercury News.

Authorities responded to more than 3,800 non-deadly domestic violence incidents last year, but advocates say it's still largely unreported, especially in Asian communities.

“That's something we want to drill down on and figure out why is it so underreported in these communities, Hendrickson said, “and try to address those issues because we want to make sure all people feels safe in their homes.”

Immigration status may also keep victims from reporting. But the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office says victims will not be asked about their status when reporting a crime.
