Police Investigate Double Homicide in a Union City School Parking Lot

Two juvenile boys, ages 11 and 14, were found fatally shot early Saturday in the parking lot of a Union City elementary school, police said.

The shooting was reported about 1:30 a.m. in a residential neighborhood near Sherman and Colgate drives, according to Union City police Lt. Steve Mendez.

The community gathered Sunday evening for a vigil for the two young boys.

Neighbors have said that the shooting woke them up.

"Last night, around 1:27, I woke up to gunshots," said one neighbor. "It was probably 15 to 20, best guess."

In a statement, the New Haven Unified School District, which includes Union City and part of South Hayward, said the victims were a current and a former NHUSD student. They were found in the Searles Elementary School parking lot, near the 1800 block of Sherman Drive, police said.

Police have confirmed that the two boys were sitting in a van in the parking lot of Searles Elementary School when they were confronted.

"There were several gunshots in the van and there were several casings located at the scene," said a police spokesperson. "We're confident that the incident happened at that location and there were no other areas involved."

The 14-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the 11-year-old died while being taken to a trauma center. The victims have not been identified.

No suspects have been arrested.

Police have not confirmed a motive in the shooting, but said they have not ruled out the possibility that it was gang-related. They have also not ruled out the possibility that this incident might be connected to another recent shooting in the area.

The NHUSD said they will provide support for students and staff when the Thanksgiving break resumes.
