Dreamliners, Direct Flights to Tokyo Coming

All Nippon Airways announced a new, nonstop route from Silicon Valley to Tokyo that begins just after the turn of the year.

The first flight from San Jose's Mineta International Airport is January 11 -- and it's on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet, the first of its kind to land in San Jose.

Heading out of San Jose is a day-long flight, from 11:45 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. The return flight is an overnight, landing back at Mineta at 10:10 a.m. the following morning. The service, according to a release, is five days a week, excluding Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Passengers can start booking flights on August 30. The afternoon arrival does allow for connectors to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Delhi and other Asian destinations.

The route to Tokyo is vital for many Silicon Valley companies, so the city and business leaders lobbied the airlines to add a direct flight.
