Driver Arrested in Connection With Collision That Killed 1, Injured 8 in Bay Point

One person died and eight others were injured after a truck driver allegedly drove into them in Bay Point early Saturday morning, a Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman said.

Around 2 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a collision between a car and a pedestrian in the parking lot of La Finca Restaurant in the 700 block of Port Chicago Highway, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Nine victims were found in the parking lot and each was transported to one of four hospitals, he said.

One of the victims was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and was pronounced dead, Lee said.

It appears the suspect was driving a full-size truck and backed up at high speeds into a crowd of people standing in the lot, Lee said.

The suspect then struck two other cars and was detained by security before deputies reached the scene, the spokesman said.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI and booked into county jail.

The sheriff's office has not released the suspect's identity.

The California Highway Patrol conducted an investigation into the collision and passed the case to the sheriff's office, according to Lee.

The case is being investigated as a homicide, according to sheriff's officials.
