Driver Crashes Into 9 Cars, Injures Woman While Trying to Evade Police in Richmond

Police say a driver on Wednesday morning smashed violently into nine cars, injuring a woman, while trying to flee from officers.

Officers attempted to stop the driver for a traffic violation at 9:30 am. in San Pablo. Police said the driver did not comply and instead took at a high rate of speed through a Richmond neighborhood before plowing into a driver and then smashing into eight parked cars in the area of 29th Street and McBride Avenue.

"A lady was driving a car, I believe going eastbound on Adrade and the suspect vehicle hit the lady and spun the vehicle," Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said.

The woman was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be OK, police said.

The force of the crash crumpled the suspect's car so badly, officers had to rip open the roof to get the driver out. A witness, Rudy, said he heard the noise and raced outside to find smoke coming from the car. Rudy said he tried to get the man out, but his legs were pinned into the car.

"As soon as I told him the police are coming he started to get really frantic and just wanting to get out," Rudy said.

The suspect was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Richmond police have handed the investigation over to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office for them to determine what charges will be filed against the driver.
