Driver Crashes Into Electrical Poles in Hayward, Leaves Woman, Child Behind: CHP

A driver in a high-speed chase in Hayward crashed into two electrical poles, taking out power for the neighborhood, before he took off and ran away, leaving behind a woman and a child in his car, according to the CHP.

The crash was reported Friday about 1 a.m. on Tennyson at Russ roads, where two PG&E power poles were knocked over causing about 100 customers to be left without electricity.

That followed a chase that began when a CHP officer made a traffic stop off northbound Highway 880 onto Tennyson, and the driver in a 2004 Mazda took off, the CHP said. He left a child in a booster seat and a woman in her 20s in the car.

CHP Officer Charles Lee said the driver was stopped because the car had false registration tags and the driver threw a lit cigarette out the window.

Both passengers were extricated from the mangled vehicle and suffered minor injuries, the CHP said.

Officers are still looking for the driver, and crews worked throughout the morning to restore power.
