Driver Fleeing Cops Crashes in Webster Tube

A man fleeing police drove the wrong way into the Webster Street  Tube early this morning, causing a head-on crash that seriously injured one  person and blocked traffic for more than seven hours, Alameda police said.

The crash occurred shortly after 12:20 a.m. in the tunnel, which  connects Oakland to Alameda, police Lt. Sean Lynch said.

Police had tried to pull over the suspect in a traffic stop but he  fled, driving over a dirt lot and heading the wrong way into the Webster  Street Tube, where he crashed head-on into two cars bound for Alameda, Lynch  said.

The driver of the first car suffered "significant" injuries and  was taken to a hospital. Lynch did not know the victim's condition this  morning.

No other serious injuries were reported, he said.

The driver and a male passenger in his car tried to run away after  the crash but were quickly apprehended, Lynch said.

Lynch said the suspects are refusing to cooperate with police.  Their names have not been released.

The crash shut down the tunnel for hours. It was reopened at about  7:40 a.m. once the crash debris was cleared from the roadway, Lynch said.
