Drunk Driver Arrested Following Fatal Hit and Run in East Bay

A 28-year-old Martinez man was killed Sunday morning near Pinole when an allegedly drunk driver slammed into him and drove off.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, parked his Toyota Corolla on the right hand shoulder of  eastbound Highway I-80 to inspect his tire. Police say that’s when a drunk driver in a white Chevy Malibu slammed into the man, instantly killing him.

The driver of the Malibu has been identified as 31-year-old Keri Cache from Oakland.

An off-duty Berkeley police officer witnessed crash and followed Cache into a Safeway parking lot in Rodeo, where he says the she began “circles” in the parking lot, apparently oblivious to the fact that there was an officer watching.

Cache then drove out of the parking lot, ran a red light and hopped on Eastbound I-80. A California Highway Patrol-Solano officer was able to pull her over, where he conducted a DUI investigation and found her to be intoxicated.

Cache was arrested for felony driving under the influence causing loss of life, felony hit and run causing loss of life, and misdemeanor driving with a suspended license. She was booked into the Martinez jail Sunday.

Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the crash call 925-646-4980.
