Drunk Driving Suspect Crashes into Hayward Home

Police in the East Bay are investigating a crash that left a house with a huge hole.

Police said a suspected drunk driver rammed his car into a newly purchased home in Hayward. The crash happened about 2:30 a.m.

Police also said the driver was speeding when he hit the curb in front of the home, went flying through the air, and into the front porch.

A neighbor describes the frightening moment of impact.

"I was lying in bed, and I heard what sounded almost like an explosion," Keith Stirling said. "We decided to come outside and see what happened, and we saw the police cars and came over and looked, and the car was so far in the house. I couldn't believe it."

The driver was not hurt and was taken into custody after being checked out at the scene.

No one was home at the time, as the new owners had not yet moved in to the house.
