Oakland police lifted a lockdown at Lockwood Elementary school in East Oakland Thursday after the campus was temporarily closed while police searched for a felony suspect considered dangerous and possibly armed.
For unknown reasons, officers with the Oakland Housing Authority police tried to detain the suspect earlier in the afternoon, but he ran off.
The school in the 6700 block of International Boulevard was put on lockdown just before 12:30 p.m., according to police, and the order was lifted just before 2 p.m. when it authorities determined the suspect was not in the area.
No description or name was given for the suspect, and details of why he was wanted weren't immediately available.
California Highway Patrol air support, Oakland Police Department personnel, and police dog search assistance from San Leandro police were used in the search.
Thursday's lockdown comes a day after a lockdown at another school in Oakland - Chabot Elementary in the city's Rockridge neighbhood. In that case, children were ordered to go inside and shut the blinds for about 15 minutes as officers chased a trio of suspects out of Vallejo. The suspect vehicle crashed about 12:15 p.m. near the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland, where two of the three suspects were arrested.
