Elderly Woman Run Over Outside San Mateo Walgreens; Driver Faces DUI, Vehicular Manslaughter Charges

A 21-year-old woman accused of driving under influence is facing vehicular manslaughter charges after police say she ran over an 84-year-old woman outside a Walgreens pharmacy drive-up window in San Mateo on Friday afternoon, police said Monday.

Nina Falk, a San Mateo resident, was struck at about 2:45 p.m. Friday outside of the Walgreens at 191 E. Third Ave., according to police. Falk was taken to a hospital with life-threatening head injuries and died on Saturday evening, police said.

Police allege that Sonia Toor, 21, of San Mateo, was driving a green Nissan minivan and was in line to use the drive-up window, then changed her mind and backed away quickly from the line, striking Falk and driving over her completely.

Officers arrived and determined that Toor was allegedly under the influence of marijuana and possibly other drugs. They took her into custody on suspicion of felony DUI and she was later booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after Falk's death, police said.

Police are asking for the public's assistance in finding any witnesses to the incident who have not yet come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department's traffic unit at (650) 522-7740.
