Election Day Poll Monitors Will Be Out in Full Force Across Bay Area

Election security is a prime concern of voters this year, and civil rights advocates and officials will make their presence known across Northern California.

The Asian Law Caucus will be out in full force Tuesday, monitoring election polls across the region and making sure non-English speaking voters get the help they need.

"Our poll monitors are the guardian of your vote on Election Day," Jonathan Stein of the caucus said.

Stein said the caucus is sending out 350 poll monitors to make sure translation materials and bilingual poll workers are available - and to prevent people from possibly scaring voters away from their polling places.

The U.S. Department of Justice also is sending civil rights monitors to Napa and Alameda counties, and the San Francisco Department of Elections already is looking into a possible ballot issue.

Director of Elections John Arnst said his office contacted the District Attorney's voter fraud unit when a man reported an unexplained mark on his mail-in ballot.

"That's one ballot of 269,000 that went out in that mailing, and the first instance of having anything like this," Arnst said.

Arnst said every election-related concern will be investigated.
