But Emanuel May Want to Fight

Alderman Ed Burke Thursday said he didn't want another round of council wars, like the ones that ground the city to a halt in the 1980s.

He might not get his wish.

Mayor Elect Rahm Emanuel seemed to signal that he was in for a battle with the most powerful alderman in the city.

When asked if Emanuel wants Burke to remain as Finance Committee Chair, Emanuel smiled but did not answer the question.

When asked if he was comforted to hear that Burke wants to move ahead with a progressive agenda.

"I'm heartened he wants reform," Emanuel said.

The two men are positioned at loggerheads heading into a new administration. Burke publically supported Gery Chico throughout the campaign and Emanuel indicated that he may be interested in removing a police detail from Burke, which he may be able to do.

As for removing him from the Finance Chair, Burke didn't seem worried. Councilmembers would have to vote Burke off the committee.
