Fairfield Police, FBI Investigating Body Found in Canal

Fairfield police and the FBI are investigating the discovery of a woman's body in a canal Thursday morning.

Police responded at 7:50 a.m. to the report of a body in the Putah South Canal in the 3200 block of North Texas Street, police Lt. Stephen Crane said.

The FBI is investigating the death because the Putah South Canal is on federal property, Crane said.

The canal is about a mile south of the last exit in Fairfield along Interstate Highway 80, Crane said.

Crane would not say who found the body or if it was clothed. He said there was water in the canal when the body was found.

The Putah Diversion Dam on Putah Creek diverts water into Putah South Canal. The 33-mile, concrete-lined canal ends in Cordelia. It conveys irrigation water and municipal and industrial water to Fairfield, Vacaville, Suisun City, Vallejo and Travis Air Force Base.

Anyone with information about the body is asked to call Fairfield police at 707-428-7600 or 428-7345 or Crime Stoppers at 707-644-7867.
