Fatal crash on Highway 880 in San Jose

SAN JOSE (BCN)

One person was killed and another hospitalized in a head-on collision on Interstate Highway 880 in San Jose this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Highway patrol officers responded to the crash at 5:51 a.m. after a gray 2009 Chevy Malibu collided with a 2008 White Honda Civic on southbound Interstate Highway 880, just south of Coleman Avenue near the Mineta San Jose International Airport.

An off-duty firefighter at the scene said that one of the vehicles was on fire, according to the CHP.

One of the vehicles did not have its headlights on and appeared to have been traveling in the wrong direction, CHP officers said.

Santa Clara County firefighters also responded to the accident. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported to a nearby hospital. The vehicle fire was extinguished by 6:17 a.m.

The crash resulted in the closure of the southbound Highway 880 for about two hours before it reopened at 8:11 a.m. Traffic was diverted onto Coleman Avenue and was allowed to reenter the freeway after several exits.

One of the drivers in the collision will be charged with vehicular manslaughter, CHP officers said.
