Woman Pushing Stroller, Infant Seriously Injured in Hayward Collision

A 21-year-old woman and a baby boy were seriously injured in a collision at the entrance to a freeway onramp in Hayward Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported at 7 p.m. at the entrance to the westbound Tennyson Road onramp to northbound Interstate Highway 880, when a white SUV reportedly struck the woman pushing a stroller in a crosswalk, CHP Officer Colton Kroop said.

Responding officers found two pedestrians -- a woman and a 1-year-old boy -- in the roadway with major injuries, Kroop said.

Both were transported to the hospital. Kroop said he did not have information on their current condition.

The driver is cooperating with the CHP and drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the collision, Kroop said. The cause remains under investigation.

There is a crosswalk at the entrance to the onramp, and Kroop said the pedestrians are believed to have been in it at the time of the collision.

There is no meter or light indicating when it is safe to walk at that location, he said.
