Firefighters Stamp Out Blaze at Legal Oakland Grow House

Firefighters on Thursday morning put out a "major" fire at a legal marijuana dispensary in Oakland and are now looking to see if all the electrical wiring was up to code.

That's the word from Acting Battalion Fire Chief Ernest Sherman who said the one-alarm fire was first reported 2 a.m. at 950 89th Avenue at G Street. There was no clear business name on the warehouse.

Sherman said the warehouse had a permit for a "legalized grow," but investigators will need to determine if everything was "up to snuff" in terms of electrical wiring inside.

Sherman didn't say how many plants were growing inside, only that they filled two rooms and he described it as a "fair amount."

In April 2012, Oakland police confiscated at least 2,500 marijuana plants valued at $1 million and arrested 11 people from a grow house in the 900 block of 89th Avenue. At the time, the grow house was not authorized as being a medical marijuana dispensary. The bust was considered the city's largest ever pot seizures.

It was not immediately clear if the two businesses are the same.
