Five Killed in SUV Crash With Big Rig Near Fresno: CHP

CHP says vehicle is registered to a Hayward-area family, according to newspaper report

Authorities say five people in a sport-utility vehicle were killed after their SUV crashed into a tractor-trailer in a fiery collision in Fresno, California.

The Mercedes SUV reportedly drove through a stop sign around 9 a.m. Tuesday and struck the big rig, according to the Fresno Bee. The newspaper also reported that the SUV was registered to a family from the Hayward area, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

CHP Officer Steve Schuh said the crash caused a fire, and three people died inside the SUV. Two others were pulled from the vehicle after the fire started but they also died at the scene.

Schuh said the truck driver was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries.

The identities of the dead and injured were not immediately available.

The collision is under investigation, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, the CHP said.
