Forget Dungeness: Maine Lobster Caught at Farallon Islands

Eight-pound anthropod discovered in crab trap.

Move over, crabs: the lobsters have arrived.

The Bay Area coast saw its first verified Maine lobster last week -- and it was a doozy, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

An eight-pound anthropod wandered into a crab trap set by fisherman Sean Hodges, off the boat Hog Heaven, the newspaper's Tom Stienstra wrote.

The theory is that the lobster was bought at a Chinese restaurant and then released into the wild, according to the newspaper. The lobster, released after it was caught, is still at large and possibly delicious.

It's likely to be the only of its kind, unless someone else releases more lobsters of both genders: breeding requires both sexes as well as enough of both to find each other and mate.

The catch, first reported by NorCalFishingNews.com, happened in 250 feet of water near the Farallon Islands.
