Former Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris Honored

A man with a long career in Bay Area public service was honored Saturday night.

Former state assemblyman and Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris was recognized at a tribute dinner held at Oakland’s Merritt College. NBC Bay Area's Cheryl Hurd shared emcee duties with Willie Brown.

Harris served as Oakland’s mayor from 1991 to 1999. Before that, he was in the California State Assembly.

He is also a former chancellor of the Peralta Community College District. Saturday night’s event was also the launch of a scholarship fund in Harris’ name.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee and State Treasurer Bill Lockyer were among the hosts.
