Fremont Police Search for Homicide Suspect in Brutal Slaying of Elderly Mother

The man is under investigation for allegedly killing his mother.

Fremont police are searching for a homicide suspect in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly woman.

Patrol units conducted a welfare check on the 3900 block of Monroe Ave. in Fremont around 11 a.m. last Tuesday where they discovered the victim's body. The woman was believed to be in her 60s, police said.

Investigators said the "level of violence involved" in this case was "severe."

Police say an investigation has led them to believe that the victim’s son, Omar Malik Pettigen, 31, is responsible for the killing. Detectives have obtained a warrant for his arrest and are now trying to locate him.

Pettigen is a Fremont resident who has been known to visit the Oakland and San Francisco area, police said. The suspect is described as a 150 lb. man with brown eyes and black hair who is roughly 5 feet 11 inches tall.

People are advised not to approach the suspect as he he may be carrying firearms, police said.
