SAN FRANCISCO — With plenty of time until Game 3, Klay Thompson sat in the owner's box at AT&T Park on Thursday night. Unlike most celebrities who attend games, Thompson was a gamer. He sat through one failed rally after the next as the Giants and Rockies played into the 12th. In the top of that inning, Carlos Gonzalez sent the Warriors star and most of the remaining fans home.
Gonzalez dumped a two-run single into center to break a tie. Wade Davis locked it down in the bottom of the inning, wrapping up a 5-3 win for the Rockies in the first meeting this season between the teams.
The Giants trailed from the start, but Brandon Belt hit a two-run shot into the first row of the arcade in the sixth, tying it up. It was pretty quiet from there. The Giants got the winning run to second in the ninth, but couldn’t score. The Rockies got the go-ahead run there in the 10th, but did not score.
Belt doubled to the left field corner with two down in the 11th and the Rockies put two on with one down in the 12th, but both rallies died. Here's what else you need to know ...
—- Belt has a homer in four consecutive games. Incredibly, he’s done that twice already this season. He also homered every game from April 18-22. Overall, Belt is tied for fifth in the league with 10 homers, and when you throw in the on-base percentage and strong defense, he certainly has the look of an All-Star.
—- Early on, Jeff Samardzija looked headed for another rough one. The No. 8 hitter, Daniel Castro, pulled a two-run double with two outs in the second and starting pitcher Chad Bettis followed with an RBI single. But Samardzija settled in and got into the seventh, a rarity for this staff.
—- Evan Longoria’s soft throw to first in the eighth skidded away for an error and put the leadoff runner on. The error was Longoria’s eighth, continuing a concerning trend. His career-high is 14 and last year he made 12 all season.

—- Nolan Arenado, the world’s preeminent Giant-killer, was 2 for 5 with two singles and a walk. The Giants will take that, probably.
—- Ian Desmond, batting .167, failed to get a bunt down twice in the 11th and then hit into a double play. Remember that moment when you see national reporters writing “is there collusion in free agency?” pieces this offseason.
