SAN FRANCISCO -- Bruce Bochy looked shaken as he gave the latest injury update, and it was hard to blame him. The Giants had to scratch Joe Panik because of concussion-like symptoms, a full 10 days after the second baseman was hit in the head by a pitch during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Bochy said Panik passed a concussion test three consecutive days after getting hit on June 18. He has played some of his best baseball of the season, and had shown no symptoms off the field. But on Monday night, Panik felt something that sent him back to the trainers. Bochy couldn't say what exactly had popped up, but said there's some concern.
"We'll have more tests done and see where we're at," Bochy said. "He can feel something ... Last night, they talked about it. Today we checked on him and he feels a little something there so we need to get it checked out."
The Giants are infinitely familiar with the process after multiple players got concussed last season. Bochy said it was too soon to tell if Panik would go on the seven-day concussion DL.
Ramiro Pena slid over to second base and Conor Gillaspie was inserted at third base.
