Grass Fire Burns in East San Jose

Smoke from the 30 acre fire could be seen across San Jose.

A smoky fire in East San Jose caught the attention of much of the South Bay Friday afternoon.

The fire was burning near Eastridge Mall. It was off Quimby Road and Tully Road.  Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen from both Highway 101 and Interstate 680.

The fire had started near Quimby and spread south away from the shopping center.

The fire was first reported around 6 p.m.

Winds in the area were clocked up to 15 mph which pushed the flames across a vacant lot heading toward a mobile home park.

The NBC Bay Area helicopter flew over the scene at 6:30 p.m. and showed crews working the fire. There were also air helicopters making water drops.

It appeared the crews were making progress on fighting the fire by 7 p.m. The fire was officially contained at 7:39 p.m

About 60 San Jose firefighters responded along with personnel from Cal Fire, which also provided a helicopter to assist.

They had to do the firefighting in near record high heat.

No structures were damaged by the fire, officials said.

Two civilians suffered smoke inhalation, but were treated on the scene and did not need to go to a hospital. They lived in the mobile home park closest to the fire.

Fire crews were to remain on the scene throughout the night to keep an eye on hot spots.
