Great White Sharks Endangered, Environmentalists Say

Petition to declare great white sharks endangered.

The great white shark is disappearing and must be declared endangered, a team of Northern California-based environmentalists say.

The federal National Marine Fisheries Service received Friday a petition filed by Monterey-based Oceana and the San Francisco-based Center for Biological Diversity, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

The petition hopes to see "both the federal and state government listing the U.S. West Coast population of great white sharks as endangered," a spokeswoman said.

There are fewer than 400 great white sharks active statewide, the newspaper reported. About 10 juvenile sharks die in nets each year.

The group wants additional conservation measures, especially around drift net fisheries, the newspaper reported.
