Local Soldier Dies, Was Wounded in Afghanistan

Sgt. 1st Class James F. Grissom, 31, of Hayward, died on Thursday in a German hospital from wounds he sustained on Monday during a fire-fight in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was his fifth deployment overseas.

A local soldier died after being wounded in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Sunday.


Sgt. 1st Class James F. Grissom, 31, of Hayward, died on Thursday in a German hospital from wounds he sustained on Monday during a fire-fight in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was his fifth deployment overseas.


Grissom graduated from Mt. Eden High School in 1999, then attended the Art Institute of Of San Francisco, where he earned his Associate's Degree.
Then in In June 2003, Grissom joined the army.

Grissom, who was a member of the 4th Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, was posthumously awarded the Bronze star Medal.


He is survived by his wife, parents and his sister.
