Hayward Police Shoot Dad Armed With Knife

Hayward police fatally shot what they say was a knife-wielding man after his daughter called 911 for help because her parents were having a volatile argument.

Lt. Mark Stuart told NBC Bay Area that police got the call just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday from a young girl reporting a domestic dispute between her parents. Loud yelling could be heard in the background of the call.

"The young caller had advised police that the father had armed himself and was threatening her mother," Stuart said.

Police officers raced to the Lord Tennyson Apartments in the 2100 block of West Tennyson Road, near St. Rose Hospital.

Stuart said they arrived to find a "violent confrontation" inside the apartment.

Stuart said the 37-year-old man lunged at a Hayward police officer with a knife in his hand. Fearing for his safety and the safety of those in the apartment, Stuart said the officer fired at least one round at the man.

The man was struck by the gunfire and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His name has not yet been released.
