Menlo Park Hazmat Situation Given All Clear

A chemical smell in a pickup truck sparks a hazmat investigation.

A bizarre hazardous materials situation is over in Menlo Park.

Police had sealed off an area around Edison Technology Park about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday while crews investigated.  Five hours later, the area is now considered safe and crews have left the scene.

San Mateo sheriff's deputies stumbled across some men in a pickup truck and stopped to talk to them.  He smelled some sort of chemical smell.  It turns out some employees of Immune Path were heating up gold in a beaker of chromatic acid in the back of the pickup truck.  There was an extension cord running from the pickup truck into Immune Path.   It's a process that is supposed to take place inside a lab - not in open air.

No one was hurt.
