Head On Crash Shuts Down Golden Gate Bridge

Traffic was backed up in both directions on the Golden Gate Bridge this morning after a head-on crash shut down lanes.

Around 8:10 a.m., Xing Lin, 32, of San Francisco, was driving a 2004 Lexus SC 430 south on the bridge near the north tower at about 45 mph when the Lexus collided with a northbound 2003 Volkswagen GTI, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Volkswagen, driven by 30-year-old Victoria Seils, of San Francisco, was traveling at about 35 mph, CHP officials said.

The impact spun the Volkswagen across the northbound lanes and into a 2009 Honda Civic driven by 25-year-old Julia Russell, of Tiburon. Russell had a passenger in the car, 26-year-old Lauren Cooper. After all three cars came to rest, debris was scattered across lanes in both directions.

The CHP issued a Sig-alert at 8:19 a.m. and shut down the two northbound lanes. Southbound lanes were also briefly shut down. All lanes reopened at 9:05 a.m.

Russell and Cooper were transported to Marin General Hospital and Seils was taken to Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center.

All three suffered only minor injuries. Lin was not injured in the collision, according to the CHP. The CHP is still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
