Highway 1 to Stay Closed Into June

It will be summer before Big Sur gets over the past winter.

A section of Highway 1 through the Big Sur region will remain closed for at least another month as crews continue to work on clearing a landslide.

A spokesman for the California Department of Transportation said Monday the highway at Alder Creek won't be open for another four to six weeks.

Alder Creek is about 25 miles north of San Simeon, or about 38 miles south of the town of Big Sur.

Colin Jones says the section of roadway was covered when "thousands of tons of dirt and debris" fell on the highway.

The same stretch of roadway was also closed for several days after a landslide in late March.

Despite the closure, Jones says businesses along Highway 1 remain open.

The Big Sur marathon had to change its course because of the slide and include a turnaround for runners this past Sunday.
