Holland, Giants Stifle Rangers to Win Series

SAN FRANCISCO — This was Derek Holland’s roughest week as a Giant, with a racially insensitive interview leading to two days of apologies and a pair of statements from his employer. On Sunday, Holland had a chance to go back to what he does best, and he ended up receiving a nice ovation as he walked off the mound.

Holland was sharp into the seventh against his former team and the bullpen settled down after two rough days. The Giants won 3-1, getting a series win in their return to AT&T Park. Here's what you need to know from the end of Players' Weekend ...

—- Holland was charged with one earned in 6 1/3 innings. He has allowed two runs in his past three starts, lowering his ERA to 3.65. The last time he finished a full season under 4.00 was 2013 (3.42).

—- Evan Longoria and Steven Duggar both had triples, with Longoria scoring after his and Duggar driving in two runs with his. Duggar went home-to-third in 11.51 seconds. Longoria did it in 12.12 seconds.

—- With Will Smith getting a couple of days to rest, there was a different mix in the late innings. Reyes Moronta breezed through the eighth, giving up a two-out double but then striking out Jurickson Profar. Mark Melancon struck out two while picking up a save for the second straight game.

—- Old friend Cory Gearrin pitched the bottom of the eighth for the Rangers, striking out two of the three Giants he faced. He struck out six of the eight Giants he faced in the series. Gearrin entered the day with a 2.75 ERA as a Ranger. That trade has worked out quite nicely for Texas.
