Janet Napolitano Begins Job as UC President

Janet Napolitano officially takes over as president of the University of California system Monday.

The transition has already been a little rocky.

Student activists campaigned to give Napolitano a vote of no confidence earlier this month.

They argued she does not have any experience, and her work as former homeland security secretary makes her a poor fit for a system that has frequent student protests and enrolls undocumented immigrants.

Student leaders voted to see if Napolitano would give them assurances before holding a referendum.

She is declining interviews about her new position and said she plans to spend her first few weeks in meetings and touring UC campuses, medical centers and labs.
