Grassroots Jump Rope Event Promotes Peace, Exercise

The event will be held on Saturday, July 23.

Roshonda Walker grew up jumping rope with her cousins at school and on the sidewalk in her Richmond neighborhood.

She wants to share some of that fun with the next generation and promote peace and physical fitness in her community.

So she and her friends organized a jump rope event, found a location at Hilltop Mall, and started recruiting volunteers to help out on Saturday, July 23rd, from 10am to 3pm at Hilltop Mall in Richmond.

What started as an idea and a Facebook call-out to her friends has grown.

Walker fondly remembers the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart tours that visited her school. But her 8-year-old daughter didn't know how to jump rope or recite the rhymes that she learned as a child. So she set out to teach her, her sisters' children and other kids in the neighborhood.

The grassroots event received donations of ropes and supplies from across the country. Now double-dutch team recruiters are coming to check out the talent.
