An annual celebration commemorating African American freedom and the abolition of slavery hit the Bay Area this weekend.
Called the "Juneteenth" celebration, the 66th annual shindig was held in the Fillmore District located on Sutter and Turk Streets on Sat. June 18th.
The festival is named after June 19, the historic day in 1865 in which African Americans were freed. This year's Juneteenth celebration boasted a car show featuring a slew of candy-painted muscle cars, a community parade and fashion show. Tasty treats were on-hand, as well.
The Prince Tribute was also a big draw for fans of the late, iconic musician.
Organizers said the goal is to raise historical awareness, educate the youth and provide networking opportunities for African American vendors.
