Kensington Police Chief Ousted After Stolen Gun Scandal

KENSINGTON, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California town has fired its police chief over his handling of the probe of a sergeant who allegedly had his gun stolen by a prostitute at a Nevada hotel.

The Oakland Tribune reports the governing board of Kensington announced Monday that it was ending contract negotiations with Chief Greg Harman.

Many residents had criticized Harman since the Tribune reported nine days ago that a prostitute had stolen Sgt. Keith Barrow's gun, badge, ammunition and handcuffs from a Reno hotel room as Barrow slept.

The weapon was recovered the next day when the prostitute's pimp shot himself in the leg with it during an altercation at a pawnshop.

Barrow was not placed on administrative leave when the department found out about the incident or while it spent eight months investigating it. Barrow will serve a suspension.
