A lane-splitting motorcyclist was killed when he crashed into the back of a car on U.S. Highway 101 in San Jose on Sunday night, a California Highway Patrol officer said Monday.
At about 8:15 p.m., the motorcyclist was driving his Harley Davidson north on Highway 101 north of Metcalf Road when he tried to pass between two cars driving side-by-side, CHP Officer Amy Tritenbach said.
The motorcyclist hit the back of a Honda Civic and was thrown from the bike, landing in front of a Honda Accord that hit him, Tritenbach said.
The motorcyclist, a 27-year-old San Jose resident, suffered fatal injuries despite wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, Tritenbach said. His name has not yet been released.
The drivers of both the Civic and Accord, a 35-year-old San Jose woman and a 27-year-old Fremont man, stopped and cooperated with the CHP investigation, Tritenbach said.
Investigators have not determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
