A facility that will turn food scraps into gas that can then be converted into electricity is set to open in San Jose.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that the plant -- a partnership between two companies, GreenWaste and Zanker Road Resource Management, -- is scheduled to open later this month.
It will turn food waste from across the city into compost and methane biogas. The biogas can then be converted into electricity.

Experts say the plant will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and capture a significant source of energy.
When fully up and running, the Mercury News reports that the plant will be among the largest of its kind in the world.
