Large West Portal Fire Causes $7 Million in Damage

A large fire that torched several buildings in West Portal is still under investigation.

A four-alarm fire in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood caused $7 million in damage to three buildings last week, according to fire officials.

 The fire was sparked at about 4:40 a.m. on Friday in the buildings at 9 and 15 West Portal Avenue, according to the San Francisco Appeal online newspaper. Those structures house the Vin Debut wine shop and Warren Orthodontics office, according to the newspaper.
 
The flames quickly spread to the popular neighborhood restaurant, the Squat and Gobble Cafe and Crepery, the newspaper reported. The fire was not contained until 3:08 p.m.
 
The fire destroyed $3.5 million worth of property in the wine and orthodontics building, the newspaper reported. The fire torched  $1 million worth of property inside the restaurant.
 
Two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
