San Jose Police Chief Larry Esquivel Tapped as Tracy's New Top Cop

From the Silicon Valley to San Joaquin County. That's where San Jose Police Chief Larry Esquivel is headed.

The city of Tracy selected Esquivel as its new police chief on Wednesday.

The 53-year-old has been San Jose's top cop since January 2013. He has been with SJPD for more than 30 years.

Esquivel sent NBC Bay Area a brief statement via text message: "I still have 2 plus months here, moving this Dept forward! I'm extremely proud to wear this uniform n serve this community, n always will be"

Esquivel will begin his new job in February.

Before Wednesday’s announcement, Chief Esquivel had indicated he was planning to retire from San Jose police this year. He had also been in the running for chief of police in Tuscon, Arizona, but he withdrew his candidacy for that position earlier this week.

Assistant Chief Eddie Garcia is expected to take over as interim police chief when Esquivel departs San Jose.
