A steady stream of officers representing several agencies across the Bay Area visited two wounded Fremont police officers Thursday at Regional Medical Center in San Jose.
The officers were shot Wednesday in separate altercations with 44-year-old Gerald Villabrille Jr., of San Jose, who died after a standoff and house fire early Thursday morning in Fremont.
One officer, on the job for about a year, remained in critical condition.
"The next 24-48 hours are critical for him," said Geneva Bosques, spokeswoman for the Fremont Police Department. "There's reason to believe he can survive these injuries. It's really just a matter of watching and waiting."
The other officer remained in stable condition.
Both officers have been hospitalized for more than 24 hours. Their identities and details about their injuries were not available.
Villabrille shot the first officer during a routine traffic stop in the area of Washington and Fremont boulevards. During the ensuing pursuit, the second officer exchanged gunfire with Villabrille and was hit. The shootings sparked a massive manhunt that culminated in a standoff and Villabrille's death early Thursday morning.

Some of the fellow officers who visited Thursday brought food and water into the hospital's trauma center, where the wounded officers were being treated.
The department offered words of gratitude to the doctors and medical staff at Regional.
"I should say thank you to the medical staff who helped to care for the wounded officers," Bosques said. "We're very grateful to them for their kindness."
