Police in one East Bay city are pushing for more license plate readers, and in another part of the region, additional cameras were approved as a means for crime reduction.
In Fremont, police urged city leaders to expand the license plate reader program that launched in 2015, saying the devices have been successful in reducing crime across the city.
The Fremont City Council is considering adding eight new cameras at a cost of about $110,000.
Earlier this month, Fremont police issued a warning to drivers about a rash of car burglaries in the city after 26 vehicles were broken into in one night. Last month, police made 11 arrests connected to auto burglaries in an eight-day span
Meanwhile, Contra Costa County supervisors unanimously approved the addition of 26 license plate readers along the Highway 4 corridor, near Discovery Bay, at a cost of about $331,000.
Last weekend, there were three shootings on East Bay freeways in three days. One shooting on Highway 4 left a 25-year-old Antioch woman dead after her bullet-riddled car crashed in North Concord, the California Highway Patrol said.
