Los Altos Residents Raise Concerns Over Airbnb Rentals Turning Into Party Pads

The Los Altos City Council in its next meeting plans to address reports of Airbnb rental homes turning into large party pads and disrupting neighborhoods.

A recent home rented out by Airbnb was reportedly the site of an 18-year-old's birthday celebration, which ballooned to more than 250 people. When police arrived to the party, many teens ran into the streets and flew over fences and into neighbors' yards.

"I mean it wasn't the first time," neighbor Tony Richmond said. "This was the third weekend in a row that this house had become identified as a daily rental of an unoccupied house that you ought to throw a party at."

Neighbors also said they saw party-goers driving drunk and relieving themselves in the street.

The neighborhood is not zoned for homes that rent like hotels.

Frustrated  neighbors brought their concerns to the city.

"I did get a request tonight to look at Airbnb and how that might be affecting us," Mayor Jan Pepper said late Friday.
