San Jose Mailman Who Dumped Mail in Trash Resigns: USPS

A United States Postal Service employee has resigned after someone said they spotted him throwing a pile of mail in a dumpster in San Jose.

Gus Ruiz, a spokesman for the USPS San Jose area, said the employee was new on the job and wanted to lighten his load.

"It's an anomaly," Ruiz said.

USPS employees have been retracing the route of a new hire and searching dumpsters after he was seen lightening his load by tossing envelops in the trash outside a business along Lincoln Avenue, in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood.

"When you have an event like this, it tarnishes the honest work and efforts of other people," Ruiz said.

Ruiz said the employee is under investigation and has resigned. His name is not being released.

Post office officials said the mailman worked several different routes in Willow Glen this week and are not sure where or how many times he tossed mail.

If convicted, the former mail carrier could face a fine or up to five years in prison.

Ruiz said the the post office was able to retrieve and deliver mail found in a dumpster.
