A man who told police he was trying to get them to kill him was arrested Thursday after throwing things at officers and leaping on the roofs of homes in South San Jose before giving up, police said.
The suspect, 26-year-old Jacob Davis, was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer and vandalism, according to San Jose police Officer Albert Morales.
At 10:35 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of a possibly mentally ill male destroying property at a residence in the 5300 block of Great Oaks Drive a block west of U.S. Highway 101, Morales said.
When officers arrived and contacted the person who called police, Davis began breaking all of the windows of the garage at the residence and was seen carrying a pickaxe, Morales said.
The suspect then began throwing various objects at officers, who in response fired non-lethal projectiles at him, police said.
Davis then retreated to the backyard, reached the roof of a nearby house, refused to obey commands by officers to come down and started leaping from rooftop to rooftop over neighboring homes, according to police.
Finally, he apparently became tired, came down from one of the roofs, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for medical treatment and evaluation prior to being booked into jail, police reported.

While at the hospital, the suspect admitted to officers he was attempting to get police to kill him with his antics, Morales said.
