Man Arrested on Suspicion of Animal Cruelty in San Jose Cat Theft Case

Police arrested a man Thursday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty in connection with the theft of a cat from outside a San Jose home last month.

Officers arrested Robert Farmer, 24, at about 6:30 a.m. near Hillside Avenue and Leigh Avenue as he slept in his vehicle, according to police. A dead cat was found hidden in the vehicle.

In an incident that was captured on surveillance video, a white male suspect lured an orange tabby cat named Gogo away from a home in the 1600 block of Hyacinth Lane at about 9:40 p.m. on Sept. 21, police said.

The person then grabbed Gogo and ran away, according to police.

Several people came forward with information about a suspect after the video was released, police said.

Investigators have not confirmed the identity of the cat in Farmer's car or its owner, according to police.

They will be checking to see if Farmer is responsible for other missing or dead cats reported to police.

Anyone with information about this incident is being asked to call the San Jose Assaults Unit at 408-277-4161.

People can also make anonymous tips to the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 408-947-STOP (7867) and anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect may receive a cash award.
