Man Dead in Collision on I-680 in San Jose

The California Highway Patrol has reopened one lane on Interstate Highway 680 near Capitol Expressway following a fatality in San Jose on Friday night.

Officers responded to a report of a fatal collision with a pedestrian on northbound Highway 680 in the number four lane at around 11:10 p.m., CHP said. When officers arrived on the scene, they found an elderly Hispanic man lying unresponsive on the roadway.

Officers performed CPR on the man until emergency medical personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the man may have been walking against traffic and then crossed into the roadway. That is when a 2001 Chevy Malibu hit the man, CHP said.

The driver cooperated with police, immediately pulling over to the shoulder after the collision, CHP said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 11:36 p.m. Friday and all lanes were reopened shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office was called to the scene.

No arrests have been made, and it is not known if alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision.
